Doctors

  • Karl B. Milliren , DVM


    Dr. Milliren graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in agricultural science and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1978. He married his lovely wife Joy in 1979 and they have two sons Bryant and Matthew. Together they started Thomasville Veterinary Hospital in July 1980. Dr. Milliren has been a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association since 1978 and is past president of the Central Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He joined the American Animal Hospital Association in 1989 and Thomasville Veterinary Hospital became a AAHA accredited hospital in 1993. Dr Milliren is a partner in two other practices Emerywood Veterinary Hospital and James Landing Veterinary Hospital where he currently consults on a weekly basis. His hobbies include flying, golfing, and snow skiing.

  • Barbara R Jacobsen , DVM


    Dr. Barbara Jacobsen graduated from Colorado State University in 1992.  She accepted an associate veterinarian position with Thomasville Veterinary Hospital in 1992.  In 1995 Dr. Jacobsen left TVH to spend more time with her growing family. Dr. Jacobsen returned to work in 1998 on a part time basis and in 2005 returned to work full time.  She, her husband Brian and their 2 boys live on a small farm with goats, horses, rabbits, cats, a pet cow, and a dog.  When Dr. Jacobsen is away from the hospital she enjoys going to soccer and basketball games as well as keeping up with 2Vetsuite_Img_48798

  • Tina Cecil , DVM


    Dr. Tina Cecil was born and raised in the Hasty area of Davidson County.  She was active in 4-H and showed Quarter Horses.  She graduated from North Carolina State University with bachelor degrees in Animal Science, Zoology and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.  She has practiced in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, and has been with Thomasville Veterinary Hospital since January 2005.  Dr. Cecil is married and she and her husband have 2 beautiful girls.  They share their home with 2 dogs and 2 cats.  Dr. Cecil's hobbies include sewing, crochet, ribbon embroidery and hardanger.  Her family enjoys traveling within the US, movies and reading, and she is an active member of her church family.

  • Mary R Rizzolo , DVM, MT (ASCP)


    Dr. Mary Rizzolo was born and raised in Newark, NJ and knew from the time she was a young girl that she wanted to grow up to be a Veterinarian. In 1980 she earned her B.S. in Animal Science from Cook College (Rutgers, the State University of NJ) in New Brunswick, NJ. She then went on to realize her dream when she graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. Upon Graduation Dr. Rizzolo relocated to the Cleveland, OH area where she took her first job working in an established veterinary practice. She continued to practice veterinary medicine and over the years also added experience working as a Relief Veterinarian and in emergency critical care. Additionally, 8 years ago she began her own house call practice, An Alternate Choice and Pawz4Fun Dog Training. Dr. Rizzolo also received a degree as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP) from Southwest General Hospital in 1995. With the warmer weather of the south calling her, she came to Thomasville Veterinary Hospital, PA in the fall of 2006 to assist with the start - up of our After Hours Emergency Critical Care Service. When not at work, Dr. Rizzolo enjoys hiking and tracking with her dog Rookie, competing in dog agility events, and playing ice hockey.

  • Jeffrey S. Esch , DVM


    Thomasville Veterinary Hospital would like to introduce Dr. Jeff Esch as the newest member to our health care team. Dr. Esch is originally from Ohio, where he grew up near the shore of Lake Erie and a short distance from the amusement park Cedar Point. Prior to earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University in 2007, Dr Esch received his B.S. in Zoology from Miami University (of Ohio). The interests that he brings to the Thomasville Veterinary Hospital are: surgery, endoscopy, pain management, and preventive medicine. Dr Esch has a particular interest in large breed sporting dogs and their related developmental and orthopedic conditions. Throughout veterinary school, Jeff worked as an emergency surgery nurse for the veterinary school and helped local humane societies with their spay/neuter programs. Dr. Esch served as the president of the student body, was awarded both a Junior Surgery Award and SCAVMA Award for the demonstration of outstanding clinical knowledge and skills in surgery and for dedication, loyalty, and support of the principles of the Student Chapter of the AVMA during his professional program respectively. While away from work Dr. Esch enjoys spending time with his Weimaraner named Stacey Mae and on weekends enjoys hiking, camping, cooking, white water rafting, golfing and playing tennis.Vetsuite_Img_48797

  • Cassandra D. Kurtz , DVM


    Dr. Cassie Kurtz is originally from Findlay, Ohio. She attended the University of Findlay, receiving a B.S. in Biology in 2004. Dr. Kurtz earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University in 2008, and joined Thomasville Veterinary Hospital thereafter. Her professional interests include oncology and dermatology. Dr. Kurtz is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. While away from work, she can be found practicing taekwondo, reading, or horseback riding. Dr. Kurtz also enjoys mentoring students through the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program, a national program dedicated to developing leadership skills in high school sophomores. She and her husband Dan share their home with two Siberian Huskies, Sara and Maverick, and a cat, Sonny.Vetsuite_Img_48783

  • Kitrina Journell , DVM


    Dr. Kitrina Journell was raised in Oakton, Virginia, located about 30 minutes outside D.C.  She met her husband, Wayne, during her undergraduate studies at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  Dr. Journell then went to the University of Illinois where she received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.  She worked for a small animal two doctor practice in the suburbs of Chicago while her husband finished his PhD and then relocated to North Carolina.  They have recently bought a house for them and their two cats, Abe and Madison.  Dr. Journell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and has special interests in small animal behavior and cardiology.  In her spare time, Dr. Journell loves to travel with family, play slow pitch softball, and tennis.  She loves spending time outside and is very happy to call the Piedmont Triad area home.

  • Mrs. Joy W Milliren , VMT


    Joy Milliren graduated from Central Carolina Community College with an associates degree in Veterinary Medical Technology in 1976.  She has been in veterinary medicine since that time.  Joy has been a member of Thomasville Veterinary Hospital since its founding in 1980 and for the past ten years she has worked as hospital manager with Dr. Milliren. She has been an AAHA associate member since 1998 and has attended AAHA Practice Management Leadership Forums since 1990 where she has gained valuable knowledge and experience in hospital and staff management. Prior to joining TVH, Joy worked as technician for two different hospital in Greensboro.  She has a passion for people and their pets and strives to make a difference in their lives through the care she provides.  Joy is a proud mother of two young men and wife of Dr. Karl B. Milliren. She is a christian that enjoys serving the Lord at her church as Sunday School teacher and singer. Joy also enjoys skiing, gardening and flying and earned her pilots license in 2005.

  • Mrs. Rene H Smith


    Rene Smith is orginally from Charlotte N.C. and moved to the Davidson County area in 1982 and attedned D.C.C.C. for two years.  Rene came to work at Thomasville Veterinary Hospital in 1985.  In 1988 she became the manager at the Thomasville Pet Center, which is T.V.H. boarding and grooming facility.  In 1999 she returned to T.V.H. as technical/kennel manager.  Rene has been an AAHA associate member since 1999.  Rene also enjoys going to the beach and four wheeling.

  • Mrs. Amanda W Beal


    Amanda Beal has been on our staff since 1988.  Prior to this she worked as secretary to a purchasing company in High Point.  She was promoted to reception manager in 1992 and has been secretary to Dr. Milliren since 1990.  Amanda has attended serveral  management seminars where she has gained valuable experience and knowledge in staff management. She has been an AAHA associate member since 1998.  Amanda is a christian and active member of her church.  She has a passion for scrapbooking as a pastime that will last a lifetime.

  • Mrs. Misty H Burton


    Misty Lewis, mother of one beautiful little girl, comes to us from Greenbrier, Arkansas.  Shortly after highschool graduation she moved to North Carolina.  She began her career at Thomasville Veterinary Hospital as receptionist in 1996 and in 1998 was invited to become part of our management team.  She enjoys fishing, boating, bowling, gardening and most of all spending time with her family.

Technicians

  • Mrs. Victoria Gaither , RVT


    Victoria Gaither (Tori) is married and has three children (2 cats & 1 dog).  She worked as an assistant and apprentice at a local veterinary hospital during high school and graduated with honors from North Davidson. She received an Associate Degree in Veterinary Medical Technology from Central Carolina Community College in 2000 where she graduated with honors.  She earned her Veterinary Technicians License in August 2000.  Victoria worked part time at both a large animal mobile practice and a small animal house call practice until joining Thomasville Veterinary Hospital in 2001.  She quickly adapted to our fast paced practice.  Her special interests include: dentistry, hematology, urinalysis and one on one patient care.  Aside from work Victoria enjoys horseback riding and spending time with family and friends.

  • Ms. Autumn Daniels , RVT


    Autumn Daniels has been employeed with Thomasville Veterinary Hosptal since August 2000.  She has worked in the veterinary field since 1998.  Autumn graduated from Trinity High School in 1997.  She received an Associate Degree in Applied Science for Veterinary Medical Technology from Central Carolina Community College  in 2003.  Autumn became a Registered Veterinary Technician in May 2005.  She is the proud pet owner of one dog and two cats.  Her hobbies include playing with her dog, collecting bassett hound and dolphin stuff and vacationing at the beach.

  • Denise Marcy , OH RVT


    Denise Marcy was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1976 she earned her Registered Animal Technician degree from Columbus Technical Institute (now called Columbus State College). She has over 20 years of experience working in all aspects of the field of Veterinary Medicine, during which time she has worked in general practices, specialty practices, and house call animal clinics. She has worked alongside emergency clinicians, a board certified ophthalmologist, as well as, internal medicine doctors, orthopedic, and soft tissue surgeons. Along with working at the Westside Animal Emergency Clinic in Brookpark, OH, Denise has also held various other positions within the medical industry, including working as an instructor in the Veterinary Technician program at Cuyahoga County Community College, Phlebotomist at Fairview General Hospital, as well as being a partner / instructor with Pawz4Fun, a puppy socialization / obedience school. In 2006, Denise decided to relocate to tranquil Trinity, NC, where in September she joined Thomasville Veterinary Hospitals’ After Hours & Critical Care Staff. She currently shares her home with an American Paint Horse named Karat and her 3 dogs, Olive, Beau, and Timber (a three legged Jack Russell Terrier). Her interests are in animal behavior and the human / animal bond.


Assistants and Kennel Staff

  • Ms. Tasha Gibbons


    Tasha Gibbons is a graduate from Southwest Randolph High School. She then came to join our staff at Thomasville Veterinary Hospital as a veterinary assistant in 2002.  During this time she has become proficient in all areas of the hospital.  She is now training with our technical staff to become a veterinary technician.  Tasha's hobbies include playing with her pets, reading, swimming and painting.

  • Ms. Dana Kanoy


    Dana Kanoy has been a part of Thomasville Veterinary Hospital since 2000. She graduated from Trininity High School and later attended school to become a certified drivers education teacher. She taught at Eastern Guilford High School for three years.  Dana has been a part of Thomasville Veterinary Hospital since 2000.  Since joining T.V.H. she has become proficient in the care and treatment of our patients.  Her hobbies include playing with her pets, Maddie, MJ. and Alexis. She also loves to eat.

  • Heather Jennette


    Heather Jennette is originally from upstate New York, not far from Syracuse and all of the snow. She attended Morrisville State College and received an associate’s degree in applied sciences. Heather has over 10 years of experience as a veterinary technician/assistant. She is very compassionate about working with animals and truly loves what she does. Heather moved to North Carolina in 1997, as her family wanted to get away from all the snow and cold weather. She has a menagerie of pets at home including but not limited to 2 guinea pigs, 1 rabbit, 2 ducks, 2 cats, 1 golden, multiple hermit crabs, and two fire belly toads. Heather has 3 children who keep her very busy with Soccer, Football, and Baseball. In her time between work and family, heather likes to go horseback riding, canoeing, mountain biking, fishing, 4 wheeling, and spending time at the beach.


  • Meredith Meacham


    Meredith Meacham worked as a veterinary practice manager/technician in Illinois ten years prior to her move to North Carolina in 1995. She earned an associate degree in applied science in Office Systems Technology from Randolph Community College in 2002. After graduation, she worked for a manufacturing company as a cost analysis assistant, but soon decided to return to veterinary medicine. Meredith worked in Asheboro as a veterinary surgical technician for four years before joining the emergency/critical care team at Thomasville Veterinary Hospital in August 2006. Her hobbies include classic car and motorcycle events, horseback riding, gardening and spending time at the beach. Meredith resides in the Farmer area with her dogs, Baron and West, along with four cats, a quarter horse and donkey.

    Brittany was hired in 2008 to join our Veterinary Assistant / Kennel Staff team. She graduated Ledford High School in 2006 and attended Davidson County Community College receiving a assitant teacher certificate. She has a Rat Terrier. Her hobbies include riding 4 - wheelers and dirt bikes along with going hunting with her step dad.


  • Amber Brown


    Amber was hired in September 2008 to join our team. She is a mother of three beautiful boys. She has two cats, Regan and Chloe and a Boxer named scooby. Amber enjoys spending time with her boys, watching football, and reading.

  • Mrs. Kay Mathis


    Kay Mathis has been with Thomasville Veterinary Hospital since March 2004.  She comes to us from Mongomery Animal Clinic where she worked as Receptionist/Technician for eighteen years. She is married with one child.  She enjoys riding horses and Harleys.

    Kimberly began working with us in the Fall of 2006. She is the mother of one sweet girl and a 16 year old four legged friend. She loves working with both people and animals. When she is not working she most enjoys working at her church. Her hobbies include photography and scrapbooking.

  • Betsy Wood


    Betsy Wood is one of our receptionist along with responsible for compliance assesment. She is a graduate of the North Carolina State University with two bachelors degrees in Zoology and Animal Science. She has had over 15 years experience in the field of Veterinary Medicine working in all aspect of the profession. Also she has a passion for K-9 / Narcotics law enforcement, which she has worked as a handler and trainer for numerous years. In her spare time she mentors and teaches high school students in Biology and ESL. The main love of her life is her 2 year old German Shepherd Jager Palizei. Her other partner in crime is a 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier Riley, who thinks he's a German Shepherd, but just don't tell him that.
